Description
Last of the monitors The USS Arkansas runs at flank speed (all of 12 knots). Designed to take on capital ships with the most modern heavy guns at the time of their building the US Navy line of monitors ended with the ships in this class. The two ships were renamed in 1909 so as to make the state names available for two Dreanought class ships then building. They ended their lives as submarine tenders. The Royal Navy continued to build monitors but they were for shore bombardment.

A missing link in the line. One remembers how the side gunned dreadnaughts begat turreted descendents wihout allowing for the monitors. Can Dewy and Hotchkiss be far ahead...

Way cool view of this old timer. I love the warships that came between the Civil War and dreadnought era.
