I almost see an American flag there (pennant). The graduated background is very effective, and serves to separate the two main circular elements, with some features quietened and others accentuated.

Definitely a "better effort". Lovely shapes and textures, and, like Cliff already said, the graduated background is very effective; it draws the attention to the lower shape and it's core.

You accomplished a wonderful amount of depth in this image, and it has motion as well. The suspended image seems to be falling and also fanning open or turning. Love it.
