De la même manière qu’Auguste Comte s’était complètement trompé au XIXème siècle en prédisant que l’on ne connaîtrait jamais la température et la composition des astres faute de ne pouvoir y aller, un astrophysicien qui aurait affirmé que les champs magnétiques d'autres galaxies resteraient éternellement inobservables aurait vu son opinion fermement démentie par l’utilisation de l'effet Faraday. Grâce à lui, nous pouvons détecter et mesurer l’intensité d’un champ magnétique dans les espaces interstellaires, et même intergalactiques, simplement en observant les changements de polarisation sur la lumière quand elle traverse un tel champ. C’est ainsi qu’il y a presque 60 ans, on découvrit l’existence d’un champ magnétique à l'échelle de la Voie Lactée puis, rapidement, dans les autres galaxies. Bien évidemment, les astrophysiciens ne tardèrent pas à proposer des explications pour l’existence de tels champs. Grazie a lui, possiamo individuare e misurare l'intensità di un campo magnetico negli spazi interstellari, ed anche intergalattici, semplicemente osservando i cambiamenti di polarizzazione sulla luce quando attraversa tale campo. Così quasi 60 anni fa, si scoprì quest'esistenza di campo magnetico per la via lattea quindi, rapidamente, nelle altre galassie. Ovviamente, gli astrophysiciens non ritardarono a proporre spiegazioni per quest'esistenza di tali campi.
