Description
There's a neat indian legend about this unusual outcropping. It is out in the middle of flat land. Said to be a volcanic core but indians believed that 7 little girls were playing on the prarie when they were attacked by a huge grizzly. The ran and climbed upon this rock and prayed for it to save them. The rock began growing taller and taller keeping them out of the bear's reach. "claw marks" are visible all around it from his attempts. There is now a constellation of the 7 sisters directly above it, said to hold the souls of those girls keeping watch over the rock.

A real beauty of a capture here, Vik. Yep, there's also the bear constellation to go along with the seven sisters one. Thanks for the descriptive narrative, as well.

Awesome shot and story !

It's a great Wyoming landmark just off old US 14. There are other volcanic plugs nearby that form the Bearlodge mountains to the north - not as spectacular. Devil's Tower was featured in the sci-fi movie "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" (1977) by Steven Spielberg. I worked several weeks just east of there. It is awesome to stand near the foot and look up. Nice image of the Tower.

Why do I hear the theme song from the movie 2001 playing in my head? Truely monolithic. kell +5
