Description
On the way home from Evergreen, CO last Saturday I noticed a herd of about 30 elk of assorted age and gender, munching the landscaping of a subdivision marker. I was not in a hurry, so I turned around and hung out with them for half an hour or so. Got some great pics, and I was amazed at the sounds they made. No bugling (not yet anyway) but they did communicate verbally, calling to each other and to the babies! Next time I'll remember I have a video mode on my camera - I want to capture that call, so soft and mild. Never heard anything quite like it. When I finally took my eyes off them, I realized the road was lined with vehicles, everyone was taking pictures! We were all inside our cars, too - completely respectful of the herd. I felt like I was with my own kind.
