Description

The Orthoptera are an order of insects, including the grasshoppers, crickets and locusts. I just don't know the name of the species on my picture... Although I'm impressed by the wonderful macro uploaded yesterday by Marcel-P (captured with high-tech lenses and tubes !) : thumb_1734725.jpg "Grashopper" I'm very happy with the quality of this shot, taken with my Canon Digital IXUS 70, a simple hand held compact camera ! Thank you very much for your comments on my previous upload: thumb_1734308.jpg "Pittsburgh"

First I like to thank you for mention my photo! :) And thanks for the comparison - very interesting indeed. It's a pity that the photo is not so sharp which is because you did not use a tripod I guess but shot it freehand and so shaked a bit during exposure. I don't know why nobody notice that and everybody is just writing "nice" or "wow". But hey, that has nothing to do with comparison about the two photos, right? Your photo, made with the compact cam, really has a good imagequality - thats a fact! But there are just some things which has to be considered. First I guess the scene is not the best to show the advantages of DSLRs. But my photo was taken at 9:30 in the evening and I used ISO800. Your shot is at ISO80. That means to compare the imagequality is not 100% fair. Another issue is that my photo was made at the maximum distance which the tubes allow so I had the option to make for example a 12MP shot just of his eye or his mouth which is really useful for smaller insects. But I dont know what has been possible with the compact cam here. And the last point for me is that my photo has a bad background - I'm not satisfied with that - it's too turbulant. Could not extract the grashopper more from the background like it should be done normally and like it is not possible with the compact cam. But thats my problem! ;) So the conclusion is for me, that the DSLR just has more reserves (altough I guess that has been undisputed) but in this case here, just the photos, the compact cam really did a great job with a comparable quality! So thanks again for this interesting comparison! :)
