Description

Built in 1920 to serve the Dallas Mill and the mill village (Huntsville, AL) the water tower fell into disrepair in 1991 when the mill burned to the ground in a suspicious fire. In 2007, funds were allocated to repair and restore the water to full working condition. In February of this year the restored water tower was unveiled. This has great significance to my family. My grandfather worked in the mill and lived in the mill village, my father was born and raised there. My mother worked there when General Shoe Co. bought the old mill. We (five of us) lived in a tiny apartment in a converted mill house. I took this photo 8/26/08 and used Picnik to add the Holga-ish effect, increasing the film grain to simulate how the water tower would probably have looked in 1920.

Water towers have such a great place in history. They are a visible marker of history and territory of small towns all over the US. I always love to hear about restoration on one. They aren't the most beautiful of monuments but they are certainly beloved. Wonderful info.
