Description

Nikon 7900 pocket camera, hand-held images. I came across this critter in the yard and set him on my truck for several shots. I have merged two images into one image. Kingdom Animalia (Animals) Phylum Arthropoda (Arthropods) Class Insecta (Insects) Order Coleoptera (Beetles) Suborder Polyphaga (Water, Rove, Scarab, Longhorn, Leaf and Snout Beetles) Superfamily Chrysomeloidea (Long-horned and Leaf Beetles) Family Cerambycidae (Longhorned Beetles) Subfamily Cerambycinae Tribe Elaphidiini Genus Elaphidion Species mucronatum (Spined Oak Borer) They range from 13-20 mm in length. One way of identification is by the long spines on the antennae. They are found from the Eastern United States, west to Texas. Eggs are laid beneath bark of dead hardwoods. Larvae feed beneath the bark for the first year and feed deeper the second year. Adults come to lights, bait traps. Thanks to those who take the time to comment. Lee

Those spines on the antenna look pretty viscious to me Lee, they look as sharp as a needle, I wonder if they have a practical use? The mandibles look pretty sharp as well. Excellent images and great documentation. Bravo!!!!!

Do they bite as hard as the pine borer? I say you did very well.

Excellent pictures and descriptions! Long-horned beetles...- I shall keep this category in mind.
