Description

Jökulsárlón is the best known and the largest of a number of glacial lakes in Iceland. It is situated at the south end of the glacier Vatnajökull between Skaftafell National Park and Höfn. Appearing first only in 1934-1935, the lake grew from 7.9 km² in 1975 to at least 18 km² today because of heavy melting of the Icelandic glaciers. Approaching a depth of 200 m, Jökulsárlón is now probably the second deepest lake in Iceland.(wikipedia)

I took this photo on the third day of my journey around Iceland's famous road #1, as the sun was low on the horizon at about 11 p.m. Although the light was weak I had to underexpose the settings of my camera, as the sunlight in Iceland is stunningly very strong, even under dark conditions. But it was a real photographer's treat to shoot dozens of photos as the sun was subtly making its way through the clouds drifting rather rapidly. You can see in the background two immense glacial flows of the Vatnajökull glacier, down to sea-level. No need for mountaineering equipment to get close to it, which is the most extraordinary thing in this area. Hope you'll enjoy this pic, full-size...

I enjoyed reading your comments and messages, thank you very much for your precious words.

Well, my browser will not let me zoom this and that irritates me because although this image looks amazing as it is, zoomed would even be better. I like the colors in this image Jean-Luc, very well captured. Fine work!

what a wonderful place...your capture has such a solitary and lonesome mood/feel...the tones and lighting add to the overall effect...very interesting narrative...your framing really compliments your capture very well

This is draw-dropping gorgeous. I love the colors and landscape in this lovely photo. That sky combined with those ice formations is breathtaking. Another reminder of how wonderful and complex this planet is. Nice framing, and great information, too.

The mood is fantastic and when I look at this expanse I squint as if looking for the giant wooley mammoth or a small band of fur-covered humans picking their way carefully in the ice and the cold. A stirring sight. Stunning shot.

That is an incredible photo! I can't believe how well you captured all of the subtle textures and colors in those icebergs. A long time ago I got to visit Glacier National Park in the US, and my attempts to photograph the ice was a dismal failure. Great job, this is magnificent!

Bon WE
