Ooh, a sweetgum ball (seed pod) from last fall. Really painful under a bare foot, and can be an ankle-twister if wearing shoes. Our small backyard receives them in the tens of thousands each year. The worst part, laggards keep falling into the following summer. They are striking in appearance. Great photo.
