It always seems so sad to me to see these guys in captivity...A beautiful creature, well captured!

I too feel that there is unseen sadness that is reflected in this picture. Unfortunately with their enviroments being destroyed, zoos become their preserve. When I took the picture I thought that was only fiting that he turned his back on the contiuous stream of gawking eyes. True empathy would not come from the lofty thoughts we might think his way, but by giving back their habitat, and there looks to be no clear way to that. The politicts of photography...

Poachers are also a big threat to these magnificent animals. I love nature and wildlife and it's hard for me to watch what humans continually do to them. It's a good photo. You really captured the expression in those eyes and the body language. And I like the various levels of people--from those reflected in the glass to the ones farther away. I can't imagine how awful it must be to be gawked at and taunted all day. I only hope they find some form of comfort. They are so intelligent and deserve so much more in life.

The reflection in the glass is that of my grandaughter, who would not really know what she would be missing. I once talked to a college level science teacher about issues involving species extinction, and he made a statement, wondering how bad it would be for people, if a species was extinct, when they never knew it existed at all. I was suprised and horrified,"from a science teacher". I wonder if we had the power to choose (which in some ways we are also exercising), which ones would we have live or die. Of course we might wish to keep those that directly impact on us - some are dog, or cat, or stail darter people. I admit my ignorance, I do not know what is dieing in Brazil. The politicts of extinction...
