It could be Mars at a stretch!! :-p
This is a close-up of that road which goes around the mine dump. You can see where water from past rains has run and then dried up.
Here is another interesting link on mining - it would seem that South Africa has the world's deepest mines. This article sheds some interesting light on gold mining in particular.

I do not know now, but at one time they used very dangerous chemicals for mining gold.really a strange landscape. you must of had your camera at ground level.outstanding results
