Description

Good evening! Speaking no longer in riddles! All my last pics are from only one place - and here it is: The cathedral of Havelberg. Its wonderful to sit under the big tower in the west and watching the birds in this very old walls.... Havelberg is a great cathedral in romanic and early gothic style, but it is although a monastery of the preamonstratenser order and a bishop´s seat and district for more than 1000 years. It is old, even for medevial times. The village of Havelberg is situated at the edge of the two rivers Elbe and Havel, and the cathedral`s mount here is the only mount for several miles. The early missionaries took the right place for their church, and we can be sure that this was a holy place before... This area was once settled by german tribes as the other parts of recent Germany, too. They left this part of Germany, as the huns under their leader Attila came at 375 n. Chr. The german tribes broke into the western roman empire. The empty space between Rhein, Elbe and Oder was slowly filled by slavish settlers from the east with languages like recent forms of polish or czech. For centuries the river Elbe was a very important frontier between the early medevial Germany and the slavish settlers. In around 940 n. Chr. a movement began that we call colonisation of the east(ern territories). Leader of this movement was OTTO I. (936-973), king of Saxonia and the first medevial german emperor. He took place at Magdeburg, a city at the Elbe, and founded a row of castles, trading places, churches and christian missionary stations along the whole river Elbe. These places should work as bridgeheads. Their names: Schleswig, Lueneburg, Havelberg, Brandenburg, Magdeburg and so on..... One of the mightiest of these bridgeheads are this one here: HAVELBERG. Once there was a religious cult place of the slavish tribes on the top, then a slavish castle with wooden palisades, then a german castle and then the first church and a bishop`s district..... If you leave Havelberg to the south and then to the east, you have a good look at this mountain of brickstones from the street. It looks very, very impressing - till today. This place was one of two cores of christianism and missionary work under the slavish tribes. This place is very important for the region of Berlin and east to Poland. We can call it our Canterbury. Picture shows the cathedral at the north, the monastery buildings southern with a cloister courtyard in the middle and the bishop`s seat and palais at the right side (Yellow houses) Below the medevial framework houses of Havelberg. Uff, a novel! Hope you enjoy it. Thanks for looking in and for your comments. Tommorrow something to the history of the church building
