Description

I know.. this is not a spectacular image at all. The reason I posted this photograph is the fact that I keep being impressed by what I call the 'Dutch Sahara'. This place, called Loonse en Drunense Duinen, looks like a desert. In the Netherlands landscapes of this kind are very rare. History: About 10.000 years ago (during one of the famous ice ages), the wind transported vast amounts of sand from the east of Europe and from Siberia to our regions. When tempertures rose, large woods covered the sand plaines. Trees were used for building houses etc.. Anyway.. large amounts of trees disappeared and heather took their places. When farmers gradually removed the heather (using it as a furtilizer for their land), the bare sand came to the surface and wind little by little transformed the plain lands into sanddunes. Eventually the sand became dangerous for villages and it's inhabitants cause the sand dunes would not stay at their places. In the 19th century people decided to tame the sand by bringing back large amounts of trees, mostly pine trees. The sand no longer is a treath for human beings but the sand still moves through the area.

This is a very interesting place and I'd be interested in how it was formed. The sand seems to be on the move by the looks of the trees standing in it. Outstanding shot and I find it to be a stunner!

An Amazing story Oskar and shows how fragile our Earth is! I have also seen great areas of sand brought up from below the earth by springs in the Netherlands
