I have no idea what type of locust this is, but man, those colours are a riot!! :-P

I remember hitting swarms of these in a car trip between Laingsburg and Beaufort West in the early 80's. The N1 was literally swarming with them. The car did not look too good afterwards.... Cheers, Clive
