Description

Mediterranean Fruit Fly: Years ago here in California these were causing quite a threat to the citrus farms. The CDFA jumped on it and stopped what would have been an infestation with several methods, including releasing sterile males of the Medfly into the population. That is most likely what I have here. Although when I saw it land on a box I was painting in the yard, I thought it was going to be a type of Picture Wing fly. After research found it isn't. Just in case I called the CDFA and sent them my photos. This thing has some of the coolest eyes I have seen. They "light up/reflect" in a great blue (see insert pics), like cat's eyes when the flash is used. Just very cool stuff! Small in size at about 1/4 inch. FULL VIEW for details. Thanks for looking and all your kind comments. -Bruce

How very interesting. I think if the CDFA had broadcast THESE pictures instead of the nondescript ones they used, I might have identified when I saw it. but I can't miss identifying it now! :-)

WOW! excellent capture, don't you just hate it when you are painting something and an insect lands on it, I find it usually happens to me on a nice gloss finishing coat?...Like toast that lands buttered side down when you drop it :)..The law of sod I'm afraid, your right cool eyes!
