Description
I always liked the Lai of Bisclavret, early 12th century
it's about a knight who cahnges into a wolf and is betrayed by his wife
to stay in that shape, but got befriended by a king
when his wife and her lover appear at court, the normally gentle beast attacks her and
Oiez cum il est bien vengiez
Le neis li esracha del vis.
Quei li puest il faire pis?
Listen now to his fine vengeance:
He tore her nose right off her face.
Could anything be worse than this is?
After the spell is broken we read:
Sur le demeine lit al rei
Truevent dromant le chevaler
Li reis le curut enbracier
Plus de cent feiz l’acole e baise.
On the king's royal bed, they see
Lying fast asleep, the knight.
The king ran to hug him tight;
He kissed him a hundred times that day.
could be normal show of affection of those days, but I think it's more.
