Description

A gathering for a RUSHCART CERAMONY at Whitworth Square, the small town of Whitworth, rossendale. Lancashire UK. Taken Sunday September 7 2008 The Rushcart is an old tradition where Parishoners collecting rushes once a year and taking them to the local church to scatter on the floor and replacing old rushes mainly in the 19th century. Evidence from paintings etc, suggests that larger ceromonies called RUSHBARING were mainly connected to the NorthWest of England. A large crowd gathered (outside the Red Lion Pub I might add) in the showery English rain. I only took 3 shots because it was so crowded with people with umbrellas. The misty look to the image is due to smoke from the BBQ lol.

Wonderful, Alan! Extremely interesting to peer into all the corners and see what's going on. It reminds me of a Giles cartoon.

It reminds me of some magazines Emma used to get called 'Where's Wally', you told me it was packed out Alan, I' glad I didn't come up there, I was thinking about it. I went to the Park to get some pictures of the steam trains that they run on Sunday's, I was told to "Go to the other side of the fence. We don't allow people inside the fence unless they are members, health and safety you know." A couple of years back they used to welcome you in and sometimes even brew up for you. We are talking model steam trains, not the ones we are going seeing tomorrow. Sorry Rant over. Excellent capture, at least it shows how popular the event has become, I know they have them in Littleborough and Rochdale as well, but I don't think this many would turn out especially in the rain. Opened my eyes. Bravo!!!!!
