Description

Hi everyone, I met this snapping turtle in the road yesterday not far from my home. I would guess between 70 and 100 years old? It was a full 16 inches across the shell left to right and about 22 inches of shell front to back. Let me say I did not get my hands very close to it. With its head and neck stretched out as long as my arm....and its tail directly back, it took up most of one lane of the road. We left this one to someone else to help out of the travel route. I selected this photo to show the impressive claws. Thanks for taking the time to read my type and I appreciate any comments. -GB-

Great picture of the old guy. I'm glad there are a few still about. He looks a little bit out of place on the asphalt, like he needs to be on his way.

Beside plastic garbage bags, shovel, leather gloves and a flashlight, I keep an old piece of blanket in the trunk of my car for rescues or removals. I certainly understand not wanting to grab this guy without a blindfold on him. He is a magnificent old guy. Great shot! He really was a biggun.

I remember when I lived in The US a friend showed me one of these. I worked out why it was called a snapping turtle too after he suggested I go and pick it up to see how heavy it was. LOLZ..............Lets just say he really didn't like me doing that! It nearly took my head off!!!!!!!!!!! Turtles in Australia are so gentle and peaceful.....he was more like a turtle crossed with a Great White Shark!!!!!
