Description
It was a busy flight today, however the highlight was the chance to fly over the Torridian peaks of NW Scotland.
Suilven (Scottish Gaelic: Sula Bheinn) is one of the most distinctive mountains in Scotland. Lying in a remote area in the far northwest of Sutherland, it rises almost vertically from a wilderness landscape of moorland, bogs and lochans known as Inverpolly.
The mountain forms a steep-sided ridge some 2 km in length. The highest point, known as Caisteal Liath (the Grey Castle in Scottish Gaelic), lies at the northwest end of this ridge. There are two other summits: Meall Meadhonach (Round Middle Hill) at the central point of the ridge is 723 m high, whilst Meall Beag (Round Little Hill) lies at the southeastern end.
Geologically, Suilven is formed of Torridonian sandstone, sitting on a landscape of Lewisian Gneiss. As the softer rocks eroded Suilven was left as an Inselberg, an "island-mountain", hence the prominence of the peak.
From the coast to the west Suilven looks like a large grey pillar, hence the name which it was given by sea-borne Vikings. From the inland side the mountain has more of the appearance of a pyramid.

One day I am going to cross the Minch..hire a car in Ullapool and drive north! ;-) From this angle Suilven looks like a giants home with steps a front door and a chimney on the far side. The surrounding countryside looks like here (well it is Lewisian gneiss which I am growing to be passionate about! Fantastic photo...defiantly a favorite.

Excellent!

Looks as fictitious as any Terragen or Mojoworld landscape. Now we know where they get their genes for other worlds. Chinese conical peaks was never enough.

Suilven was covered in cloud (and it had the customary rain) when i went up there earlier this summer - and it was one at the top of my "must see and take photo" list :( looks amazing from the air - you really get a sense of its isolation in the landscape. Again - you are really lucky being able to get up in the skies to take these great shots! :)

Suilven looks stunning from any angle - but being able to see it from the air like this really shows the entire formation to advantage!
