Description

It's too bad there isn't a genre category for "Crazy as a Coot!" 'cause that's certainly where I would have put this one! Smith Rock is a mecca for climbers. If you want to find a website that talks about the geology of Smith Rock, I wish you luck! I finally found something, but I had to search through about a bazillion climbing web pages to get there! That's all anybody seems to care about when it comes to Smith Rock ... climbing. I don't generally color on my photographs, but I made an exception in this case, because otherwise there would be absolutely no scale, and you wouldn't know how big this rock formation is. Do you see the little red circle and arrow pointing out a white dot on the rock wall in the main image? It's to the right of center, and down a bit. That white dot is a climber. I kid you not. Obviously, then, I used my zoom to get all the pictures of climbers! LOL! This is one big rock! .......... Full view is worth your time, and you might even want to blow it up a little if your browser has that function.

I'm with you, my friend. Rock climbing is a bug that has never bitten me. But I do like this shot, and especially all the zooms of the climbers. I like the little bit of the Crooked River down in the corner, too.

Falling to my death while climbing a rock wall is just not my idea of a fun way to spend my day. I'll keep my feet on the ground and marvel at those that enjoy this sport. Your pictures are fantastic and really give a good idea of what the climbers endure.

How exhilarating this must be for those who love this sport. Your images describe it all so well, and thank you for the notes on perspective and scale! This might not be my thing, (nor is bungy jumping,[dope on a rope, anyone?]), but my hat is off to these brave souls, and to the photographer!

A little crazy for sure, but 20 or 30 years I might have been one, I was an avid climber of the bluffs here, but got out of it after joining the Navy, had more than enough climbing there. Beautiful scenery and excellent capture!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Amazing collage Tara. I can imagine a rush feeling when at a base you look up and make a decision to take a first "step" upright. Huge, very huge mountain.

And this is what my son says he wants to do next, climb stuff like this. "Crazy as a coot" doesn't begin to cover it!!! Great collage, it truly shows how immense this place really is.

Thanks for the insight into the size of this place! If you hadn't 'coloured' it, I would never have realised how huge that rock was!! Nice selection of the climbers, too!

I too think ther should be a category "Crazy as a Coot!" I think I could find some images for it myself. I used to do a bit of rock climbing in my teens but nothing like this, I don't know how they can do it without safety ropes. I know why they do it that way, for the thrill and adrenalin rush it gives. I take my life in my hands every time I drive my car(you want to see me drive my car, or ask Alan), but I wear a seat belt for some safety. Excellent capture and presentation, great postwork. Bravo!!!!!

I agree with James, the figures of these nut cases, indicate the scale of the rocks...I have NOOOOOOOOOO head for heights, and wouldn't dare this venture, well captured Tara, you did a nice job on the presentation too.
