Description

It was a gray day and it looked to me like they had just painted this lighthouse, it was soooo bright white! Would have been nice to have a blue sky in the background... Hope you like it... a bit of info on this: The Umpqua River, an area of diverse countryside, was expected to be a central region for trade in Oregon. As a result, the first lighthouse along the Oregon coast was located on the north spit of the Umpqua River. Its light began to shine six miles south of Reedsport on October 10, 1857. Sadly, this lighthouse was destined for a short life. Oregon's first attempt at a lighthouse was somewhat unsuccessful, as it fell to the elements of the ocean and its sandy foundation just six years later. The Umpqua River Bar was found to be somewhat dangerous. A couple different ships, including the vessel "Bostonian," had a hard time at the mouth of the Umpqua. Because of this, after the Umpqua River Lighthouse came crashing down, Cape Argo was the chosen location for Oregon's second lighthouse. The Coos Bay area soon became a primary shipping area, and the Umpqua River's commerce slowed somewhat. However, the Umpqua River was still a very important part of Oregon's coast. It wasn't until 1888 that the Lighthouse Board approved funds for building a second lighthouse at the entrance to the Umpqa River. Finally, on December 31, 1894, Umpqua River's lighthouse began to shine again - this time from a different location. Learning from the first mistake, the second lighthouse was built on a 100 foot ridge, high above the sand dunes and Pacific Ocean below. Today, this lighthouse is located near the Umpqua Lighthouse State Park There is a terrific viewing area, along with a campsite and Lake Marie

charming short lighthouse, I got use to a tall one in my area. You look up still see a prism so small, not like on yours. Wonderful to see it close. Great story to read about it's past.

This is beautiful, even with no blue sky. I love the red in it.

This is such a pretty lighthouse. I just shot it for the first time on my recent vacation. I'll eventually get to posting a picture of it, with a blue sky. :-)

This must look very kewl lit up at night. Gotta admit tho- it's one of the shortest lighthouses I've seen. But as long as it does it's job that's all that matters. This one does have some nice character to it. Your right, it does look rather brand new with a paint job. Have a great weekend Akemi-san~ Aloha~

Great capture, Akemi. I love lighthouses. We have a few around here that I hope to capture one day. There's just something so romantic about them. You're right, it does look freshly painted. You did a wonderful job capturing that against that gray sky. I bet if I took it, it probably would've been all blown out, lol. Anyway, always such a pleasure to see you uploading, sweetie. Have a wonderful evening. Hugs -M :^)
