Description

Was going over some old images and I figured I'd share this instructional image I had. Basically it shows how to hollow out the interior compartment of a vehicle model. 1. Have your vehicle shape. 2. Loop cut away the portion that will have the interior. 3. Duplicate the loop cut portion. 4. Weld back on the original part cut away. 5. Lock and wireframe view the original vehicle block. Scale or otherwise modify the interior volume (short of changing vertex count) so that the interior chunk to fits inside. 6. Invert the interior piece while in object mode. 7. Select interior region such as a window. 8. Select exterior matching region. (Unlock or un-wireframe as needed, duh.) 9. Dissolve faces. 10. Bridge. 11. Repeat for all windows. Add edge loops as needed to control smoothing and prevent "webbing". Final. Smooth preview. Even though that example is a bit old, it's still quite relevant to how the process goes. But I've improved a bit on it since. Still not a bad technique to start out with and modify as needed.

And yes, I did modify the interior chunk where the wheels go. Otherwise, it'd be funny in that spot. Also the vertex count rule is probably specific to the window areas. (Otherwise it won't bridge.) If you try this sometime, you'll see how it works and will figure some other things out. Have fun!

VEry well done! Thanks for showing this Wings 3D tutorial. I haven't used this 3D software before, but your image is pretty self explainitory. Excellent work!

It's interesting you picked a squarish Jeep Commanche kind of car. The first spline model I tried to cut windows into was a Jeep Commanche. Previously I tried making it as a roof and base and pillars and assembling it. I now prefer to just make the windows transparent selections in the shader layers. I also did a lot on 40's windows which are inset more compared to the nearly flush glass of today. Happily following your brand.

That's cool. I just downloaded this program and would like to model some hot rod bodies. It may take me a while. I don't even understand the language yet.
