Description

Nikon 7900 pocket camera, hand-held image. Here is a collection of tiny spiders, all but one of them are Jumping spiders of one sort or another. Worldwide, they are the largest Family of spiders with over 4,400 species described. One way to help determine what Genus a spider belongs to is to look at the arrangements of the eyes. 99% of all spiders have eight eyes. Almost all of the other 1% have six eyes, but there are a few that have 4 or 2 eyes. If you are interested in discovering more about spider eyes, go to http://bugguide.net/node/view/84423 All of the spiders in this collection are very very small 1/8 inch (3-4 mm). 1&1a. Jumping spider Genus (Metacyrba) 2 Immature Jumping spider Genus (Thiodina) 3 Antlike Jumping spider Subfamily (Synagelinae) 4 White Banded Crab spider (Misumenoides formosipes) 5. Unknown Jumping Spider preying on an ant Thanks to those who take the time to comment. Lee

I'm glad that you included a shot of your fingertip 1a to show how tiny these critters are, a fine collection indeed and your documentation makes valuable reading too. Thanks!

Wouldn't you know, of the six that you show, I only recognise number 6, I have loads of these or something very similar in my garden, as you say they are about 3-4mm in size. I have seen the crab spider before but only on here, I think the first one I saw was posted by Andrea. Excellent collage Lee. Half of these wouldn't even be noticed by the average person. Bravo!!!!! Interesting link for the eyes, I will check it out, thanks.
