Description

WW II-era 'pigboats' actually only spent a relatively small percentage of their patrol time running submerged. They needed to flush their ventilation systems and recharge their batteries fairly frequently. As long as they didn't encounter problems due to mechanical failures or combat damage, they could do their surface running at night or under cover of weather, etc. But a German U-Boat that was damaged and running for home on the surface was vulnerable and a plum target for RAF patrols of the North Atlantic convoy approaches. The RAF's favorite variant of the Curtiss P-40 was the Kittyhawk, and since it was most effective at medium to low altitudes I imagine it saw a lot of service in 'close support' roles such as the North Atlantic patrols. I doubt very many RAF pilots ever saw a U-Boat on the surface, but I'm sure those who did were dancing with glee in their cockpits as they dealt out a little payback for all the damage 'those damnable Kraut pigboats' did.... More fun with freebie war models from Bazze.....Kept trying to do this one in Bryce, but gave up after three app crashes when image was nearly done rendering - aarrrgh!

My dad had a chance to fly a P-40 shortly after the close of WWII - loved the experience. He said any pilot who flew one loved it. Great POV and composition here - the sky and sea really do look like the north sea...
