Description
The 1934 sectioned replica Rocket, NRM.
George Stephenson and his son, Robert were among the first locomotive engineers. They believed passionately in the power of steam, but when the Liverpool & Manchester Railway was built, the company could not make itsmind up about how to run the new line. To settle the matter, they staged a contestat Rainhill near Liverpool. Stephenson entered the Rocket alongside three rival locomotive designs. But Rocket had a secret. It used a pioneering boiler design.
Rocket was built by the Stephensons to win a £500 prize - a huge sum in those days. They fitted the boiler with 25 copper tubes. These let the water inside absorb the heat more quickly, making more steam. That drove the pistons but the Stephensons made the steam do yet more work. they forced the steam through a narrow exhaust at the bottom of the chimny. This created a draught which made the fire burn more fiercely, producing more heat - and more power.
These two principles have been used on every steam locomotive ever since!
