Description
Ghia from Italy has a long history.
Let's turn the clock back to the early 50s when Virgil Exner was hired by Chrysler to head the "concept-car" department. The goal was to create some concepts that would feature in civic parades and attract attention to the maker. Exner took the task with gusto. He read about Ghia sending a Plymouth-based car to the USA along some executives to prospect work. That was post-WWII time and compared to US standards Italian workmanship was cheap. Exner -- who was a huge fan of European design -- arranged a meeting with the Ghia guys and was given Chrysler the green light to establish a fruitful partnership.
Ghia/Chrysler concepts were not only well-built, they had a quiet elegant appeal imho and much more interesting that GM Earl's baroque inventions. Several concepts were made, and the symbiosis was such that you would not tell which was Exner's brainchild and which was Ghia's.
This particular design was not made for Chrysler, but Alfa Romeo benefited from some exclusive features also present in the 55 Chrysler/DeSoto, like square rear wheel openings and slanted rear fenders, not to mention the wraparound windscreen adopted by Buick and Oldsmobile in 54. The rocker panel twin chrome bars are present on the Karmann-Ghia as well. The side "windsplits" cleverly end in what looks like indicator signs. Of the 20 examples built by Ghia this is the only with stretched wheelbase chassis, which makes for better proportions.
A design that makes a small car look big yet elegant. I just love its cleanliness and quintessential 50s'style. Kudos to Ghia, forever.
Hope you like it and thanks for watching.

With the words it grows on me a bit. I just have to part with the DOHC four and think of it powered by a Simca flathead V-8 to truly see the Chrysler influence. Let the right women lounge around it and keep it out of the paddock.

A really sporty car. it screams muscle and power. I for one love it.The front end to me actually appears as if it has some Corvette influence, or vice versa.
