Description

Azores. Terceira island. These chapels are called 'empires'. They are found in almost every parish of the islands, but in Terceira they are specially colorful. They are dedicated to the Holy Ghost, and have on top a dove perched on a crown and scepter. They are usually not far from the church, but belong to the community, and are the center of communal activities, and specially of a festivity dedicated to the Holy Ghost. In those days a boy is designated as emperor, dressed as such and leads a procession. The church saw these practices with suspicion, as probably derived from pagan traditions, but nowadays it has come to terms with them. If you can't beat them ...

nice shot of a wonderful little building. the style and usage are very suggestive of pagan/Roman times (although the islands were not settled until the 16th century, i believe).

great foto, those suppersticions is the main reason those islands stay poor, no wonder the church looks at them with suspicion, I think they better ban them and set the people free, oh well god gave us free will I guess. Do you also have fotos of the inside ?

I imagine that all the fancy trim was done by hand right on the site. It takes a real crafts person to do that sort of work.excellent capture
