Description

This is a strange one the crazy accelarated growth, I am not sure the cause, so I thought Andrea would know. It made an interesting image anyway, where a rosebud should be!

This is a Robin's Pin-cushion, or Bedeguar gall, which is widespread and common, although I haven't seen one for absolutely years! I remember being fascinated by the illustration in 'The Book of the Flower Fairies' which i was given for my 6th birthday and still treasure. It is caused by the gall wasp Diplolepsis rosae, and under the hairs the gall is hard and woody with many chambers each containing a single wasp grub. The insects mature and leave in the spring: they are almost all females and they lay their eggs in the opening buds without mating. There is no alternation of generations, so they cause only one sort of gall. So exciting to see this, Kevin, thankyou for showing us!

Excellent shot Kevin, this reminds me of the red worms I used to buy for my tropical fish :)...Nice that Andrea has enlightened us so, I was woefuly ignorant of such things, and would have beleived this part of the plants anatomy, fasciation on the other hand I was aware of, it was 1983 when I first heard the term, whilst being employaed as a seasonal gardener, thanks for posting this!

We saw many of these as children and I have to own up. We took one apart to see what was inside. Thanks to Andrea I now know what the grubs were. We didn't tell our parents, but buried the evidence. It's a great picture Kevin.
