Description
Guess where i just went? Back to St Andrews for some revelry coupled with helping my parents furnish a property for rental. Oh and one or two outings with my camera with an aim to capture what i hadnt done before. And i think this shot sums up the "havent ever seen this one before" ethos i went for. Taken at low tide from the sea floor of the harbour (yup, looow tide) i was going for a boat which was tided up and on the rocks (might post that one up too) and then some guy with a video camera evidently doing some vid for the university press team or something was videoing this guy from on top of the harbour wall to my right. One of those "right place right time" shots i think.
Anyway dont bother about the next bit if you dont care about shot context:
The red gown he is wearing is a St Andrews tradition dating way back and urban legend states it was as a means of identifying undergraduates in public houses as they were required to wear them at all times back in the day. Who knows how truthful that story is now.
I think the sigificance of the pier must also be explained - which will shed light on why the guy was being video'd here. Tradition holds that every student must walk (in their gown) up and down the pier in what is known as the Pier Walk - now, being the avid student that i was at St Andrews i have managed to forget the reasoning behind this and also when it happens - i tended to take part in the more "contemporary" traditions ;). But on one day in the year students descend on the pier and walk right to the end on the lower section (you should be able to see a shelf in this shot) then back along the upper walkway (on top where the guy is here). Again being the avid student i was with these matters, i never owned a gown nor did i go on the Pier Walk. Ah well... looks cool tho ;)
Enjoy!

I have a black, wool, very long opera cape that looks very similar to this and it keeps me warm as toast in the winter. I love the vibrant red of this paired with the rugged stonework. Excellent shot and spectacular opportunity taken advantage of.

Perhaps you missed out but at least you got to catch this great shot. A lot of work went into building that pier and it looks as if some is going into caring for it at least from your capture.
