Description

Having picked tons of these growing up, I was certain when I found these in the front yard that they were Shaggy Mane's. I should have picked them immediately but I came back inside to start cooking breakfast and then put the pic on my pc, followed by a google search to make sure. That took under an hour but when I went back out to get them, they were destroyed, broken all over the lawn:-( The neighbor kids had seen me taking the pictures...as as is their usual practice they had to destroy something...Hopefully there were enough spores for more to pop out soon so I can get them. Info for Shaggy Mane's below: Shaggy Mane Mushooms Coprinus comatus Season: May - early June; September - October The Shaggy Mane Mushroom is found from wooded areas to city lawns. It is a hardy, edible mushroom that can be easily distinguished from others during its early stages by its large, shaggy, white cap. As it ages, the cap opens from the bottom and slowly decays into a black, inky liquid. The stalk remains after the cap has dissolved, usually at a height of 4 to 6 inches. I found the info here: http://illinois.sierraclub.org/calumet/Species/Mushrooms.html Thanks for looking and for previous comments and favs!

Great image Lynn, I would be scared to pick my own mushies, I am woefuly ignorant of fungi, in our news the other day, there was some folks that went out and picked wild mushrooms, only to kill themselves on death caps :(

Ah yes! One has to be very careful when picking mushrooms...Its been years since I picked any but I do remember the ones we picked that were safe to eat. Very sad that had to happen Ronnie!

Cool looking skin on the mushroom. They are famous for spreading their spores all over the place when kicked. Hopefully after the next big rain you get.

Whatever you do, don't eat Coprinus with a meal containing alcohol, or drink anything alcoholic. They contain the chemical used in the drug 'Antabuse' which is designed to cause vomiting and so put one off drink. Such a shame to induce this effect in someone who doesn't have a drink problem, and make them bring back their delicious dinner! Super pic by the way, you are getting better and better, Lynn!

In Sicily this mushroom is called "sledgehammer drum" for its characteristic shape (when it is not yet open). Fantastic shot! :)
