Description

Illustration depicts a theoretical unmanned aerial vehicle called the HTV-3X Blackswift. The aircraft is proposed as a potential successor to the SR-71 Blackbird. The Blackswift is thought to be planned for unmanned flight at Mach 6 using some form of scramjet engine. This successor has been proposed to be numbered as the SR-72. The model and drawing are based on one of very few low-resolution Blackswift images released to the public. The illustration appeared as the cover of the Sept. 2008 issue of C4ISR Journal. Nice ,But.....The texture work and canopy needs work . You would think that after 30 years plus the Black Bird project would look a bit more advanced than shown in your render ! But thats just my opinion.

There is no canopy, it's unmanned. And it isn't the Blackbird, it's a proposed Mach-6 successor. What you see on the top are possible maintenance panels (squares) and a depiction of the hatch system where the refueling probe would go. My drawing is based on one of the few low-rez Skunkworks images that are available to the public. But thanks much for the comments.

Over the past 5 years, more of my illustrations at Air Force Times, C4ISR, and Space News have been of proposed or existing UAVs and unmanned spacecraft. I figure by 2020 there won't be "butt in the seat" pilots if the USAF can help it. According to a source at DARPA, the illustration above is a damn-close rendition of one of the Blackswift prototypes -- but who knows?

Who knows if the plane depicted above will ever get funded -- or if we already have it. Kicksave
