Description

St. Catherine's Breakwater, Jersey, is all that exists of a projected "refuge" harbour for the Royal Navy. The harbour was designed during the period of Anglo-French rivalry during the 1840s, and work began on the North breakwater in 1847. It was finished in 1855, by which time Britain and France were fighting as allies against the Russians, and the planned Southern breakwater was never completed. The harbour at St. Catherine's was intended to be used by the Royal Navy during wartime, and was to be used as forward bases during a blockade of the French coast. It is now used mainly by leisure craft as a quiet anchorage. Fishermen use the long breakwater for catching conger eels, mackerel and bass. There is a landing slip at the base of the breakwater. It is a lovely place to walk and admire the coast of France which is often visible as it is only some 14 miles away. Thank you for your views and comments Susan

Beautiful capture, wonderful view; certainly looks like a great place for a stroll - or even a jog (though I'm not quite up to jogging myself - lol).

You mean to say people back their boat trailers down this to launch them or is it just for unloading your boat? I can see the crowd around here trying to back down a ramp with a bend in it! They can hardly back down straight without ending up with half a vehicle hanging off in the water! LOL Very nice shot!

Yes boat owners certainly do reverse their vehicles and indeed their boats down the slipway! Quite interesting to watch, I have reversed down myself when my ex was going diving . Not an easy task. When the tide is high it covers the slip and can be really rough at times. I took a B & W view yesterday too so will post that tomorrow so that you can see the different atmosphere.
