Description

Please help me identify this one! Any entymologists out there? Neon green and with semi-rigid and very sensitive spikes. The inset shows it, after delicate poking with a twig. No caterpillars were harmed, but perhaps a little annoyed. Bloomington, IN, 01 Oct 2008, ND70 photo, 105mm lens

I did a quick little lookup on these. I think they're some variety of Saturniidae moth caterpillars. Perhaps one of these? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Io_moth

These are Io Moth caterpillars and they should not be touched with bare skin. The spines secrete a toxin that is quite unpleasant. Very similar to touching a Bull Nettle. The caterpillars will turn into very colorful and stocky moths. The females will be reddish and the males will be yellow. The caterpillars will make flimsy cocoons in the leaf litter. If this occurs late in the season, they will overwinter before emerging. I posted an entire series a month or so ago that shows all the stages of this Moths life cycle. Nice shot. Thanks for sharing. Good macro work! We have these in the islands and sure enough, touching them results in unpleasant skin reactions. They are beginning to become a problem locally. ( if Jim doesn't post for a while we'll know he got too frisky and his fingers are out of commission! )
