Description

Piracy on the high seas in the 17th and 18th centuries was a very dirty business, practiced by human vermin. Their livelihood depended on fast and nimble vessels and utter ruthlessness; their tactics were stealth, surprise and overpowering the helpless - they'd ''show their heels'' to warships because they wanted no part of a fair fight. They were nearly impossible to catch up to in open seas, but they were occasionally cornered in coastal waters. Even though hopelessly outgunned by a British frigate, this crew chose to stand and fight rather than face the certainty of a trip to the gallows. Two British broadsides later the pirates' gundeck was in shambles and the contingent of Royal Marines encountered only feeble resistance when they boarded. Few were left alive in the charnel house below decks - the injured captives were nursed back to health for their date with the hangman....
