Description

This view is from the Tioga Pass Road (highway 120) about two miles east of Ellery Lake. Tioga Pass (elev. 9945-ft. or 3031m) is somewhat west of Ellery Lake. The elevation of this pov is ~8700-ft. Highway 120 crosses the 1,189 square mile (761,266 acre) Yosemite National Park from east to west across the Sierra Nevadas. The park was established on October 1, 1890. Elevations within the park range from 2,000-ft. to 13,114-ft. Soon this road will be closed for the winter. This picture was taken on 22 September 2008. Thank you for viewing and commenting on my recent uploads and a special 'Thank you' to those that may have added some of these to their favorites, Sig... Update: Just saw on the internet today that recovery efforts to retrieve the remains of missing aviator and adventurer Steve Fossett and his aircraft have been suspended due to snow. Recovery efforts may not begin again until next summer. The area where Steve Fossett's remains were found are in the general vicinity of this upload. I guess I was lucky to make it across before road closure.

Marvelous rocky vista! I have followed Fosset's recovery closely. I feel for the family. But as far as this shot goes, it is one that really brings home the thought that we still have many desolate areas that have not been built out and thank heavens for that.

I am trying to image the tonnage of all that scree up against the side of that mountain Sig, it must have taken years for it all to build up like that. Superb capture zoom is a must, for fantastic detail, I can see all sorts of faces in this, its as good as a cloud scape for that. I see faces in near enough everything Sig. Excellent work. Bravo!!!!!

Tioga Pass, is that up King's Canyon? My last crossing of the Sierra Nevadas was over Sonora Pass up from the Mother Lode Country. What and When begins to dominate Why.
