Description

The terraforming of Mars was accomplished without trouble. Oxygen, carbon, nitrogen, hydrogen and other necessary elements were derived from the mineral formations found in the planet’s underground; plants were genetically engineered to draw sustenance from the soil and to create the necessary organic mass; small varieties of insects and other invertebrates were bred in laboratory ecosystems and tested for the entire century in which the terraforming was carried out. Mankind was to have a second home, finally. It wasn’t before the third year of colonization that things fell apart. Buried deep inside mars mineral ores was what came to be know the first and only true sign of extraterrestrial “life” ever to be known to man. The quotes are appropriate in this case because what emerged from the Martian mineral ores was a virus, and viruses are not considered to be fully functional life forms. They are an intermediate between non-life and life. And as virulence was concerned, this one—which came to be known as “Fractaspirala insidiosa”—this one was as stealthy and deadly as mankind has ever faced. As soon as this microscopic airborne nemesis enters its host, it will stay dormant for a period of three years. Then, out of the blue it will become active, burrowing on every human or animal tissue it can reach, creating large colonies in the form of spirals and in its ingenuity forming tumors that will divert blood and nutrients flow to the affected area. The surrounding tissues will serve as waste deposits, and the entire area will suffer necrosis in a period of less than a week. In the end, subcutaneous blood clots and ulcerations will cause hemorrhages that cannot be contained and are fatal in 100% of the cases. The disease came to be known as The Red Plague, both in honor of its home planet and because of the red color the skin takes because of high blood concentrations. Not only the entire Martian colony was obliterated, but also the entire fleet of Earth space vehicles and facilities had to be destroyed, and tens of thousands of Earth’s inhabitants lost their lives. After three years of transports and interpersonal communication between Earth and Mars, the virus found its way into all three functioning space stations and to the space elevator. Everything had to be scraped—gathered and sent into the Sun by an unmanned set of rockets—setting the space program back by over 100 years. Space personnel on leave were also infected, but fortunately the pollution level on Earth’s atmosphere prevented the virus from killing the entire Human race. ____________________________________ UF5 Your comments and suggestions are always very welcome.
