Description

Mono Lake is believed to have formed at least 760,000 years ago. Beginning in 1941 water was being diverted to provide resources for the growing Los Angeles area. So much water was diverted that evaporation exceeded inflow and the surface water level was falling rapidly. By 1982 the surface area of the lake was reduced to 152.5 sqkm, a 31 percent loss of the 1941 surface area. Since 1994 attempts have been made to prevent further loss and the surface water level has risen since then, but is still below historic levels. This picture was taken on 22 September 2008. I do see improvement since the first time I saw photos of this lake back in the early '70s. There are not as many sentinals standing "guard" in the water either. :-) Outstanding pano.

An amazing photo. Are those birds I see in the picture? Well, that is the price of civilization, isn't it? We seem, as a race, to destroy everything we touch. How sad.
