Damn, I thought frantically. How the hell do I get myself into these things? Desperately, I tried to slow my racing heart and silence my breathing. "Could you do me a quick favor, gorgeous?" he had asked, with his usual self-deprecating smile. "And check on the crew salvaging that abandoned freghter? They were supposed to check in 8 hours ago. Probably just a problem with their subspace transmitter, but I'd like to be sure. And you *are* the closest." Like a fool, I'd blithely agreed. After all he'd done me more than a few favors in the past and I could easy spare the time the short detour would take. But instead of a broken transmitter and annoyed salvage crew, I'd found an empty ship. Well, not quite *entirely* empty. But there certainly were no other *living* creatures aboard. Damn, Alverson, If I get out of this alive I'm going to give you one hell of a big piece of my mind.
