Description

Also known as the Storch (stork); Hanna Reitsch flew one of these into Berlin, April 1945, landing on rubble-strewn streets, and out again two days later, both times under heavy Russian fire; what a gal!! Again, from the Collings collection in Stow, MA.

Drace, you bet it is; we didn't stay to see the re-enactment, but all this guys planes, including an F-4 that lives in Texas, are airworthy, and he flies 'em all!

Nice Storch! An early STOL aircraft with leading edge slats and flaps this aircraft could practically hang in the air. One of its roles was artillery spotting. The major problem was the inverted V8 engine had a tendency to run hot and cause a vapor lock problem. Some early models flew with its engine cowling removed. This type seems to have the open cowling.

It also is famous for doing a landing and an overladen take off in Italy. Nice shot.

Way cool! The French continued to use the design after the war as the "cricket."

Just been visiting your gallery. Good stuff. Have always admired the Storch for its' land anywhere capability. I've flown a number of light aircarft and would love to have one of these for an hour or two. Glad to see someone is doing such a great job of keeping it going! Thanks for the good words on my Buffalo Soldier upload. I remember the old vet being at the dedication of the monument in 1992...was amazed myself to see that he made it to 111. I'll check out the site name you sent. Many thanks. Bill
