Description

My family is mostly from North and South Dakota, and these photographs are from the family archives. I'd been thinking of putting this together, and PJ's wonderful historical shots inspired me to keep going with the project! Top left: Raleigh, North Dakota, around 1910. Top right: Climbing in the Three Buttes area. Can you imagine climbing all the way up there in one of those dresses? From their clothing, I would guess this was around 1910, as well. Second left: Kids playing with a sheep on the farm. Second right: Baseball game between Shields and Flasher, North Dakota in 1911. Third left: Two of my great-great aunts being squired around on the river by an unknown gentleman. (I'm quite sure THEY knew him! Obviously they're quite proper.) This would be the sisters of my mother's mother's mother. (Got that?) The one on the right is Aunt Rogina, and I think the one on the left is Aunt Clara. Third right: A gathering of some townspeople - about half of them are my family members. My grandmother is the little girl on the far right, the other little girl is my Aunt Violet, and their mother is the woman standing behind them in the white dress. That would be my great-grandmother, Ella, who I knew quite well. She didn't die until I was twenty. Bottom left: A barn raising at a friend of the family's in Montana. Bottom right: Haying. They all got together and everyone helped with everyone else's fields. It's amazing to think that these shots were taken about 100 years ago, isn't it? My niece and her husband went back to Raleigh last month and stopped in to see the relatives who are still running the farm. They had a great time, and are planning another trip! ..... Full view for sure!

These are really incredible shots and record so much history - not just family but life there at that time. It's easy to imagine what it was like back then. I have been back to many of the spots my ancestors owned and built only to find highrises and new structures now stand on the land.
