Description
Urquhart castle, built on the site of an earlier motte castle. The great tower construction covers 300 years of history from the basement 14th century to the top 17th century. Uquhart bay, Loch Ness,Scotland
I have made this a bit larger so you can zoom in for detail.
My research into this castle revealed an aspect of the Clans which has not been discussed much. This castle was more of a home and status symbol rather than a strategic stronghold.None of the many occupants tried to withstand attacking forces. If the occupiers put up a defence which killed attackers then they would be slaughtered when the attackers took the castle. So it was safer to surrender.

amazing aerial capture

The banks and the airlines took that approach for many years. In today's world the Brazilean celebrities and now the US Navy subscribe. I have no idea what the Somalian pirates are going to do with five US escorts but the matter is under discussion. Now that the goats who dwelled in the yard are gone and sharp blades trim the grass the place looks as neatly trimmed as a SEALs beard.

Sieging a castle was very messy buisness on both sides and neither where well disposed to the other by the end of it.

Nice shot! Reminds me of the trips through the loch many times with RAF Marine Branch but the only view I've had is from the water.
