Description

Nikon 7900 pocket camera, hand-held image. This is a male 12-spotted Skimmer (Libellula pulchella). It is about 2 1/4 inches (56mm)long and is found through out most of the US. The dark spots on the wings are counted to arrive at the 12 part of the name. With 8-spotted Skimmers (which look very similar) there are no dark spots at the ends of the wings and the eight white spots are counted to gets its name. I have seen this species a number of times but this is the first good image of one I have managed to get. Thanks to those who take the time to comment. Lee

It seems that it was painted with an delicate hand. And the body frosted as well. Fabulous clarity and the wings are so beautifully apparent.

Before reading your text I counted the spots and was wondering why it had twenty spots yet was called a twelve spot, never mind. Superb pov for this Lee, I like looking down on them, I am facinated by the wing structure of these beautiful insects. Excellent capture, narrative and presentation. Bravo!!!!!
