An excellent view of the colorful USN schemes used in the 30s. You can see where the Grumman F4F Wildcat fighter came from. The last of the F3F series was taken out of carrier service in the summer of 1941.

My first thought, "This is a well-fed" aeroplane," so it was no surprise to discover it was known as the "Flying Barrel." Actually it must have been a nifty piece of work for the time, though it must have been near the end of the biplane era. Now what happened to the triplanes?
