Description

A second pic from an afternoon of basically being lost in the remote Arizona desert. We drove until the dirt road was undriveable, then packed our snacks & water and started walking. It was as if we had slipped back in time: no roads, houses, telephone poles. . . almost no sign of civilization at all. The few remnants we stumbled upon (literally, knowing me) were from long ago. And all the intrusive noises and sounds of the city we've grown so accustomed to ignore on a daily basis were noticeably absent. But what was quite surprising to me was the roaring sound of silence. Like when you're listening to a radio station and the song ends but nothing follows. So you turn it up for some stupid reason, I suppose to make sure your own radio hasn't died. You can tell you've got it turned up loud, but nothings there. To view such an immense landscape and hear absolutely nothing at all, not even the wind, makes one feel that perhaps they're missing something. You keep wanting to turn up the radio. But the only sound detectable is from your own feet walking through the red sand. And so red it is. Reminds me of those NASA photographs from the planet Mars. If an alien spacecraft landed where we were walking they'd conclude no intelligent life existed (even if they spotted me) but damn, there sure is a lot of red soil on that planet! Well, this is getting a bit silly. Perhaps it's in part do to our latest discovery: Five Rivers Central Coast Pinot Noir, 2006. This exceptional fine red wine hails from the Five Rivers Winery in Hopland California. Not only has this ended my search for the perfect red wine, it's very reasonably priced too! So that's my tip for the day. Thanks for hanging in there! My first Wild Lands of Arizona pic can be found right here! Thanks much! marshall

Hopland is just down the road from me, and I know that wine--so I know how much fun you're having!!

There is a place known in my circle of desert rats as The Lion's Den where you 4W in about 35 minutes. There aren't any notable washes there, just flat land with dense and varied cacti. I often spot borrowing owls and huge hawk nests when traveling out there. Finally, our tracks turn us along the base of a low but harsh mountain and carefully we work our way up. Once stopped at The Lion's Den above the valley, the view is awesome. The valley floor stretches as far as you can see. Nothing moves, nothing makes a sound... its a big silent valley. The same solitude and quiet is seen in your photo here. What a great place.
