The birches live around here but not much further North. The bark works better for paper than the similar looking trunks of aspen which are green in color.

very well seen, I like this.. if I might make a suggestion.. looking at the exif data it seems the combination of the long zoom length and slightly slow shutter speed are the reasons for the slightly fuzzy appearance of the image.. as it's a closeup with no real depth of field I'd say you could have quite happily opened up a few stops from f/8, had the same amount in focus and had a slightly crisper image from the faster shutter speed.... you probably know all this anyway but just thought I'd say what I saw.. tis a cool shot nonetheless!
