Description

This photo was taken on Saturday last. It is blurred but the land is France which is approximately 14 miles from the coast of Jersey. You can just make out the wind turbines on the hill. You cannot see the huge detail I was able to see with the naked eye as my camera is not a brilliant once, I so wished I had a better one last Saturday! The group of Islands in the forefront of the photo are named Les Echrehous. Many are submerged at high tide. Most of the islands are uninhabitable, or contain only fishermen's huts. There are no permanent residents on the islands and there is no fresh water on there. Due to erosion, they are now much smaller than they may have been within historic times. The name 'Ecr©hous' is Norse in origin. 'Hou', the toponym found also in Jethou, Lihou, Brecqhou, Burhou and other islets (all other Channel Islands), derives from holm, meaning island. The first part of the name appears to be traced back to the Norse word sker, meaning reef. The Ecr©hous are actually, geologically, part of the same island group as Les Dirouilles (west) and Les Pierres de Lecq ('the Paternosters') (further west). Hope you enjoy this capture on full view despite its less than brilliant quality but I wanted you to see how close France is to my home. Thank you for your views and comments Susan
