Description

Ever watch a photographer "work"? They walk in slow circles and shift positions as if stalking some unseen beast because they know the slightest change in the point of view will dramatically change a picture. They climb ledges, roof tops and ladders or better yet they lie down on dirt and whatever else to get the right angle. The best photogs have a streak of passion running through them that propels them into all kinds of craziness. Little did I know that when I took this picture over two years ago in the Grand Canyon that such craziness wasn't an isolated incident I attributed at the time to the scorching heat and the overwhelming beauty and magnificence of the canyon! On a more recent trip to the Ozark Mountains we found ourselves on a narrow two lane road cut high into the side of the mountain. Unable to resist the beautiful lush green valley below Marshall climbed up on the railing and stood precariously with a foot on each post and me clutching his legs to steady him as he took a picture. Well as he was composing his shot a few guys in a truck came around on the side of the mountain and yelled "Hello!" as they drove past. Not wanting to be rude; I turned my head and yelled "Hello!" back. This caused me to shift my upper body and turn slightly. The sudden movement caused him to lose his balance and wobbled in the air a couple of seconds too long before falling backwards onto the road and me! Needless to say, we both could have tumbled down the mountain side. After we recovered from the near disaster we laughed our heads off at our (well my) foolishness. But it's these moments that makes everything so worth while. Go out doors! Life is too short! So go on jump on that ledge, climb that railing, however, I'd recommend bringing some rope and securing yourself to a tree or something! Thanks for stopping by...happy photographing!

I like the Ozarks story..but this isn't the Ozarks in this photo? You are so right..we get into ant nests and on rocky ledges, knowing better or simply not thinking beyond the photo..thanks for this one.

I like the way you describe the passion of photographers which so often drives us to weird spots others wouldn't consider... commonly referred to as being mad but I like your way better ;) great scenery and fun shot!

I agree with your words, we all must have a passion for the outdoors and nature to be up before dawn or perhaps waiting for that last ray of light to end the day for the 'right' shot. Nice work~
