I never did find out what this statue was built in memorince of. I took this shot while I was transiting through the Suez Canal

the Turks tried to capture the canal during WWI, and there were various operations to stop them. see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sinai_and_Palestine_Campaign the monument appears to be in French, which may be because French was the preferred European language of educated Egyptians at that time.
