Description

I have to say that this is one of the most amazing views of the moon I have ever seen. (Taken on 10/18/08) I'm still practicing with the whole night photography thing...discovered I need a tripod...but I thought the shot was pretty cool. I know of some stories about the harvest moon, but, there must be some mystical cool stories out there about the moon being this color...what it means, does it foretell something...etc... I'd love to hear them if anyone wants to share! Thanks to everyone for your continuing support!!!

The color really is amazing. I don't know if that color has a particular significance of any kind, but I will come back and see what others may have to say. Thank you so much for sharing with us.

Hi, just deleted the old comment so I can post the information regarding the blood or hunter's moon: In the northern hemisphere, the Hunter's Moon appears in October or November, usually in October. Traditionally, it was a feast day in parts of western Europe and among some Native American tribes, called simply the Feast of the Hunter's Moon, though the celebration had largely died out by the 1700s. There is a large historical reenactment by that name in Lafayette, Indiana during the early part of October. from wikipedia there's a lot more about it I just Googled Hunter's moon and got right to where the info was at. You have captured a very wonderful image Well done

Mike gave a great description of the blood moon or hunter's moon. Because of the time it usually appears it is connected with the harvest celebration ... the Samhain holiday for some, Halloween for others :) I have seen the moon very orange in color but have never had the pleasure of seeing it this color. Wonderful capture and thank you for posting this!

Beautiful capture! the atmosphere is full of (very) small particles of dust, sand, etc. These particles scatter the short wavelengths of the light from the moon (the blue and green light) in the atmosphere, leaving only the longer wavelengths (yellow and red) for us to see. the moon is either low in the sky and it looks red for the same reason that a sunset does; or if it's high in the sky it may be experiencing a near-lunar eclipse. Passing through the penumbra of the Earth will make it appear deep red. The reason for all three effects (the sun or the moon appearing red near the horizon, and the red penumbra) are the same: the scattering of light from the sun in the earth's atmosphere. Blue light gets scattered out first (which is why the sky is blue) and then green, leaving red light to last the longest. At any rate, this is a wonderfully beautiful shot you have here! (((♥hugs♥)))

Is this the original color? WOW, great capture. Yeah, you might need a tripod if you want to do night capture. If you are using a reflex digital camera you can also play the trick of increasingthe sensitivity (ISO) of the capture.
